Lap mini gastric bypass

Mini-gastric bypass is a feasible and safe bariatric surgical procedure.Lap mini gastric bypass(MGB) is a modification of the regular Roux-en-y gastric bypass(RYGB) procedure. As compared to RYGB, MGB involves creation of a bigger pouch and single anastomosis of the loop of jejunum with the pouch. It is technically easier as compared to RYGB and gives equivalent results.

Who Are The Candidates For Lap Mini Gastric Bypass:

BMI more than 45, Diabetics are the suitable candidates for MGB though we prefer it in More than 50 BMI peoples.

Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery:

Mini Gastric bypass surgery is performed under anaesthesia. Your surgeon makes several small incisions on your abdomen. A laparoscope, a thin instrument with a light and camera on the end, is inserted through one of the incisions, allowing your surgeon to clearly view the internal organs on a monitor. Small surgical instruments are inserted through the other incisions to perform the surgery.

The first step is to reduce the size of the stomach so that it holds less food. The stomach is converted into a long slender pouch up to the antral part by stapling.

The second step of the surgery involves the creation of a bypass for food to flow from the new stomach pouch. A loop of small intestine preferably between 150 and 250 cm is chosen for anastomosis depending upon the surgeon and the metabolic condition of the patient. The middle section of intestine is attached to the opening in the stomach pouch creating what is referred to as the "omega loop". The loop enables food to bypass the lower stomach, duodenum, and a portion of the small intestine. At the end of the procedure, the incisions are closed with sutures.

Post-operative care:

After mini gastric bypass surgery, you will have to stay in the hospital for about 1 to 2 days. Your doctor will prescribe pain relieving medications to keep you comfortable. You will be given instructions to follow regarding wound care, diet and activity such as:

  1. Keep the incision area clean and dry.
  2.  After surgery you will be put on a liquid diet followed by pureed or soft foods.
  3. Sip water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.
  4. Follow the diet regimen given to you by the dietician.

The Advantages Of The Mini Gastric Bypass Over Traditional Gastric Bypass Surgery Include:

Lesser operative time(1.5-2 Hours)

  1. Technically easy

  2. Lesser risks of complications

  3. Similar or more weight loss

  4. There may be an increased risk of acid/alkaline reflux following this procedure, but other than that the risks are lesser when compared to traditional gastric bypass surgery. Overall, the benefits of the procedure far outweigh the risks.

  5. Like RYGB, MGB patients will require life long supplementation of multivitamins, calcium and iron tablets.

Follow up after surgery:

Patients are often discharged within 1–2 days , if they can stay for a period within driving distance of the hospital. Routine follow-up is at 1 month, then every 2 months for the first 2 years, and then yearly.
