Naveli Bariatrics Laparoscopy & Maternity Hospital : Spleenectomy (Spleen Removal)

Spleen is the most vascular organ in the body. It is involved in producing protective humoral antibodies, protection of B and T cells and plasma cells, acts as reservoir of blood and removes unwanted particulate matter(bacteria).

Spleen removal is done in selected cases of trauma, hyperspleenism (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, hereditary spherocytosis), neoplasia(lymphomas), splenic cysts.

Laparoscopy is the preferred procedure in elective surgical settings. Most important pre requisite is pneumococcal, influenza and meningococcal vaccination to prevent overwhelming post spleenectomy infection (OPSI).
