Obesity & Metabolic Surgery

Currently, 3 types of surgical procedures are widely used - Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, mini gastric bypass(MGB). Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which has approximately 150,000 procedures performed annually, is the most common.

The trend to laparoscopic vs open procedure surgery has coincided with an increase in safety for bariatric and metabolic surgery. Today, more than 90% of all procedures are performed laparoscopically.

All 3 surgical or bariatric surgery procedures have demonstrated efficacy for losing excess weight and improving co-morbidities. Certain procedures may be more appropriate for certain patients. Which procedure to use is typically a decision that the patient and the bariatric surgeon make together.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) Mini-gastric bypass Sleeve gastrectomy

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is a type of weight-loss surgery that reduces the size of your stomach to a small pouch - about the size of an egg. It does this by stapling off a section of it. This reduces the amount of food you can take in at meals. The surgeon then attaches this pouch directly to the small intestine, bypassing most of the rest of the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine. This reduces the amount of fat and calories you absorb from the foods you are able to eat for even more weight loss.

This is also known as OAGB (One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass) or Omega loop gastric bypass, in which long stomach tube is created and loop of proximal small intestine is joined. This is a absorptive procedure which gives significant weight loss with good correction of diabetes, Hypertension and dyslipidemia.

Decreases the size of the stomach, limiting the amount of food that can be eaten at one time. During the sleeve gastrectomy procedure, a thin vertical sleeve of stomach is created using a stapling device. The rest of the stomach is removed. As a result, the patient feels fuller sooner and stays fuller longer. Sleeve gastrectomy allows for normal digestion and absorption.
